ORGANIZATION OF THE CLASS
-You should be prepared to start class on time - be seated, homework and iPad out, no talking.
-Each class begins with prayer intentions and a prayer, scripture, verse, or hymn in Spanish.
-Gum chewing is not permitted in class only because it could hinder your Spanish pronunciation.
-Every day you will practice speaking with a partner or in a small group. It is important that you stay on task and speak in Spanish. The more you practice the language, the easier it will become for you. Group projects will be required from time to time and you may have to meet outside of school to complete them.
GRADING
The grading scale will follow the SMCC scale found in the handbook.
Each marking period will be weighted as follows:
50% Tests and quizzes
30 % Written work: compositions, grammar exercises, projects, journal entries,
homework
20% Oral presentations, skits, interviews
ABSENCES
-You are responsible for making up any missed work, including class work, homework, assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, and presentations.
-The number of days you are absent is the number of school days you have to make up the work.
-If you miss a test, quiz, oral assignment, or listening activity, you should arrange to make it up before or after school. Make up work will not be done during class time except for rare occasions.
-Please check the class website for all homework assignments and material covered during your absence. Assignment handout/assignment files will be posted online when possible, otherwise you will need to get them from me in class.
-Students needing to meet with their college counselor should do so during their study hall, or before or after school. Exceptions will be made at my discretion.
-Remember that it is school policy to have a permission slip signed by teachers if you are missing classes to assist with any school related activity.
HOMEWORK
Use the following heading on all assignments:
-First and last name
-Sra Memije
-Spanish IV(period)
-Date
-Title of assignment
You should skip lines when completing a written assignment. This leaves space for you or for me to add corrections.
Written work will be assigned on a regular basis. We will go over workbook assignments together in class or you will submit them online and receive instant feedback. You will earn points for completing your homework. Students who do not complete their homework will receive a grade of 0.
You should review/study grammar and vocabulary every night. This can even be just 10-15 minutes. It is better to study each day than to try to cram the night before a quiz or test. You will retain information and skills better if you review often.
NEATNESS AND SPELLING
Spelling and use of accents are important in Spanish, and both will be graded.
Omitting an accent can change the meaning or the pronunciation of a word. If you are missing an accent, the word will be marked wrong.
For written assignments, quizzes or tests, you should be sure to write very neatly and legibly. If I cannot tell what a letter is, the word will be counted as being spelled wrong.
LATE WORK
All assignments are to be turned in on time - on the specific date in your class period. If you turn in your work later in the day, it will be considered late and points will be deducted. Late assignments will be penalized as follows: 1 day late -10%, 2 days late -20%, after 2 days a grade of 0 will be given for that assignment. A requirement of this class is the completion of assignments.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Refer to the SMCC Student Handbook for policies regarding cheating and plagiarism.
IPAD USE
I will instruct you when to use your iPad during the class period. Understand that you will not necessarily use the device all the time. It is important that you stay on task and use only the app you have been asked to access. You may not check or send e-mails unless you have been instructed to do so. You may not access books or assignments from other classes, check grades or surf the internet. Your full attention should be on the task at hand.
All students are expected to follow the "Acceptable Use Policies" as detailed on the SMCC website.
BEHAVIOR AND TARDINESS
You are expected to respect your teacher, classmates, and all materials in the classroom.
You should always follow directions and refrain form speaking when someone else has the floor. Raise your hand if you have something to contribute, unless I ask the class to shout out answers or to respond as a whole.
You are expected to be on time for class. You should be in your seat before the tardy bell rings.
Students coming late from another class must have a pass from that teacher admitting them to class. Otherwise, the tardy is unexcused.
Consequences for unexcused tardies and inappropriate behavior are detailed in SMCC's Behavior Rubric.
DICTIONARIES AND TRANSLATORS
You may use an dictionary app or translator app to look up a single word. My favorite translating app is WordReference
DO NOT use the translator to translate a sentence or blocks of text. They do not accurately translate them and it is very obvious when you have done this. You will receive a zero for any assignment on which you are discovered to have used and online or an app translator.
